The Long Walk

A day for packing up in Hong Kong and then lunch with Wingo before heading just north of Shenzhen to the city of Dong Guan for a day long workshop on Sunday.

This will be the first time in this city and I have been invited by a woman who was on the MA in Cultural Studies at China University and who saw me talk 2 years ago. She was brought up here and her mum was from the old part of the city which is now (and haven't we heard about this so often) under threat from development.

She says "This project wants to take Shanyu Mansion (a historical building)'s repair and activation supported by the folk's resources as an example of exploring and practicing the notion of folk conservation, space activation, community development and so on. " Interesting.

Rebecca from CCCD is coming with me to translate and be a travel guide and as we go on the 3 hour bus ride from HK she tells me this is her first time in China. She is excited! It is a rainy ride and we have to get out with all our stuff 2 times - once to leave HK the other to get into China.

We are met by CiCi and Cathy (local hosts) and go for a lovely vegetarian meal before heading to the YHA to sleep.

I prep for the day ahead by looking for songs I have written in Mandarin and remembering how to sing in the language!

Tomorrow will al be done with translation.

I see the sign and wonder what it's saying
Intuition is far more exciting than suggestion

I imagine the names of the streets and avenues
The scale of the buildings and squares so huge
The taxi moves on as does the conversation
Learning never stops

I see the sign and wonder what it's saying
Intuition is far more exciting than suggestion

This is a Long Walk and I follow by instinct
The road I follow has many guides
New friends to be made on every journey
Learning never stops

I see the sign and wonder what it's saying
Intuition is far more exciting than suggestion
